The next few months are going to be incredibly exciting for MMO gamers with Tera, Guild Wars 2, and Star Wars the Old Republic reaching critical hype stages. As a star wars fan I'm incredibly interested in what a new MMO with the franchise could bring. Thankfully, the new intro cinematic has been released and let me tell you, it's awesome.

Unfortunately though, a good pre-rendered video sequence does not make a good game. The verdict is still out on KOTOR:O as it seems to feature clunky combat animations and a terrible combat system but hopefully these things can be fixed during its beta cycle. I have every faith they will be.

The Rift Levelling Experience

Well, it's been a few weeks since the Rift head start and I have to say that despite a few flaws, I've had a great time. A lot of people would say that the game is a WoW clone but I'm personally inclined to believe they're incorrect. The game itself has far more in common with Warhammer than WoW and it seems the only copy and paste job from WoW to Rift is the UI. This itself is a great idea because I've always found it a pain to get used to radically different UI systems when switching from game to game. On top of basically porting the WoW UI (and disallowing third party addons, which is a different beast for another post,) the devs also implemented several features that were developed as third party addons for WoW such as snowfall keybinds and several buff mods. Basically the overall "similarities" between WoW and Rift end there in the same way that the similarities between WoW and EQ end at the fact they're both MMO's.

Levelling in Rift was an excellent and refreshing experience. The game itself never got boring with so many specs to try out for my class. Rift uses a system where you are given 9 different talent trees that you can pick three of at any given time. This allows for a lot of leeway in class roles and playstyles. Ever wanted to tank as a rogue or cleric? You can in rift! Want to do truckloads of elemental magic damage as a Warrior? Spec Riftblade! On top of all the possibilities you have for class customization the actual process of levelling is enjoyable as well. Each zone feels unique and has its own backstory that adds to the overall lore of the game. Mob skins and models are rarely reused between zones and when they are the zones tend to be ~20-30 levels apart so you don't get bored of seeing the same old thing.

The best part about the Rift levelling experience is that there's just so much to do. You can play through the game like you would in any standard MMO by simply doing quests. There are also "Saga" quests that span the entire levelling experience and reward you with epics upon completion at level 50. If you start to get bored with quests you can grind on the multiple rift invasions that are up in a zone at any given time. These reward excellent experience and work around the same principle as public quests from Warhammer. They also give good blue and epic quality items if you do enough. Just like any other MMO, there are also numerous dungeons spanning your level range you can run at any given time. Finding groups for these isn't even an issue because classes are capable of doing so many different things. You'll rarely sit around waiting for a tank or healer and instead get to cut straight to the action!

The game does have its downsides though. Roughly one or two quests in each zone seemed to have a bug that would have to be worked around in order to complete them. Dungeons were also slightly overtuned for the casual MMO player. While it isn't really a bad thing that dungeons are difficult, many players would much rather prefer a mindless frag fest for free exp while levelling and I can completely understand that sentiment at times. However, the biggest flaw this game has comes in the form of one of its zones, Iron Pine Peaks. This zone is a huge nuisance for numerous reasons and I highly suggest bringing a friend with you if you decide to quest there. It really seems like the zone could benefit from some fine tuning.

At the end of the day, Rift is a really fun and unique game that I've found a lot of enjoyment in. I plan on continuing to play it at level cap and next post I'll have some info for you regarding the expert mode dungeons that are completable at level 50! Congrats to Trion on a fantastic game and I highly suggest any seasoned MMO player pay Telera a visit!

Blizzcon 2010 Announced!

Well, it's about that time of year. After Blizzard's press release yesterday I kind of figured they were getting ready to announce Blizzcon. The event will run Oct. 22-23 at the Anaheim Convention center again despite the rumors floating around about Vegas as a possible location.

Of course, the announcement of Blizzcon is only the beginning. Expect lots of hype for the upcoming Cataclysm expansion as well as Starcraft II and Diablo III. Don't forget that tickets will be going on sale within the coming months and be prepared! It looks as if Blizzard plans on implementing the same queue system from last year. This means tickets will sell out incredibly fast and they will only be available for online purchase.

Personally, what I find most exciting about Blizzcon's date is that it gives us a good window for the Cataclysm expansion's release date. Blizzard has never released a major patch, let alone an expansion before the convention. Instead, the try to push them out the week after the convention, slightly before Christmas. So, look for Cataclysm to hit shelves early November!

Video Games Helping to Save Lives

Every year upwards of 20,000 lives are lost in war-torn countries due to unexploded ordinance such as land mines. Can a video game educate children about land mine avoidance where traditional methods have failed?

That's the hope of Corey Bohil, a visiting assistant professor at Michigan State University's Department of Telecommunication and project lead on Undercover UXO. Undercover UXO is a simple computer game that sees players navigating a pet through a maze in order to find food. Throughout the maze are the telltale warning signs of unexploded ordinance - dead cattle, disturbed ground, and the shells of burnt-out vehicles - which the player must report to a local inspector lest they risk losing their pet.

"The goal of the project is to teach children in Cambodia and other at-risk areas to recognize and avoid unexploded ordnance," said Corey Bohil. "If the player recognizes the indicators and avoids them, then the pet finds the food and everyone is happy."

The project began life as a student project in a class taught by Bohil called "Collaborative Game Design." The motivation behind the game's development were shocking statistics from the United Nations Mine Action Service, which estimates annual unexploded ordinance related deaths at around 20,000, along with the failure of traditional teaching methods.

"For years the local communities would try to teach people how to avoid landmines," Bohil said. "They would have presentations made to community elders, publish booklets, and nothing would work."

As a long time hardcore WoW player and gamer I can’t possibly explain how excited I am for the new Final Fantasy MMO. I’ve been involved in the WoW raiding community for about four years now, but before that I was a hardcore FFXI player. I had to say that I was a little worried about this new release, but with Square releasing new screens like this I’m incredibly pumped.

Portal 2 Info Released!

Officially released details on Valve's sequel to Portal were scant. Fortunately, retailer GameStop comes through with some major details, including the addition of a two-player cooperative campaign mode and all-new characters.

Gametops's description of the PC and Xbox 360 game indicates that Portal 2 is due later this year—the online retailer lists an October 26 release date—bringing with a cast of "dynamic new characters" and "never-before-seen areas of the Aperture Science Labs." And yes, as hinted at earlier, players will be reunited with GLaDOS.

The only details on Portal 2's multiplayer mode from GameStop are that it will feature its own unique story-driven campaign. The "new mode forces players to reconsider everything they thought they knew about portals," requiring players "to not just act cooperatively, but to think cooperatively."

It's been nine months since THQ officially announce the Warhammer 40K action RPG Space Marine, and we're finally getting the first screenshots for the game. Are they worth the wait?

Announced in May of last year and shown in footage form at E3 a month later, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine seems to be a title that THQ and developer Relic are taking their own sweet time on. As evidence to that, these are the first two screenshots that have surfaced for the action RPG.

I'd say that if the game's visuals are this gorgeous, Relic can take as much time as they need to make sure the game plays as good as it looks.

Scalpers Getting $300 For StarCraft II Beta Keys

Not that I'm sharing this in a run-go-get-it sense. But some enterprising key recipients have chosen not to participate in the StarCraft II beta. Some 49 keys are being auctioned on eBay right now, with bids reaching up to $305.

Most of the keys are cards given out at BlizzCon 2008, which provide access to one of the company's upcoming betas - in this case, StarCraft II, which started on Wednesday, or the Diablo 3 beta, whenever that begins. The cards also came with a code for a polar bear mount in World of Warcraft. Other keys on sale were said to be acquired by different means. Caveat emptor.

Three keys are listed at Buy-It-Now prices of $375, $450 and $949, although that last one includes a guy's full Battle.Net account, which features two level 80 World of Warcraft characters. No one's bid on that yet. The highest bid on a key so far is $305.

What BioShock 2’s Hacking Looks Like if You’re Colour Blind

Whilst reading the 2K Forums earlier today finding out about all the BioShock 2 bugs, I found a thread complaining that hacking was almost impossible for colour blind gamers.

Curious to see for myself (no pun intended) just how much impact being colour blind makes to the new hacking mechanic, I ran the above image (sorry for the low quality, it’s a photo of the 360 version) through a colour contrast analyser application I used when re-designing this very site (you can download it here).

When hacking, the needle moves across the dial. Pressing A on a green hacks, blue gives you a bonus (blue areas are not found on most hacking displays), white gives you an electric shock and red triggers the alarm.

For those 6% of male gamers (only 0.1% of female gamers) who suffer from deuteranopia (a form of red-green colour blindness) the image below shows what hacking looks like.

If you’re in the 1% of males (0.01% of females) with protanopia (another form of red-green colour blindness) this image shows you what you’re up against.

Finally, if you’re in the 0.01% of gamers (using averages this estimates to a few hundred BioShock 2 players) with tritanopia (blue-yellow colour blindness) this is your hacking.

Hopefully 2K take note and patch in some colour-changing options.

Everyday folk discovering colossally valuable collectors' items amid everyday junk has been the lifeblood of antiques shows for years, but it's not every day you see a real-life gold-in-the-attic tale play out on eBay.

Last week, North Carolina eBay user lace_thongs35 thought she was putting up an everyday, 80s-era Nintendo Entertainment System (together with five games) up on the popular auction site. But less than an hour after the first bid, the price was over $6,000 -- and on Wednesday, when the auction closed, the final selling price topped $13,000.

Why? Not the console itself, but one of the games bundled with it -- a deeply obscure 1987 release called Stadium Events, a highly sought-after collectors' item. But it wasn't even the game itself that was worth the bulk of the money -- it was the original cardboard box, which collectors value at a breathtaking $10,000. Fewer than 10 complete copies of the game are thought to exist, and retro gaming aficionados consider it one of the hardest-to-find NES games ever made.

Bet you're wishing you hadn't let Mom throw out your Nintendo collection now, eh?

EA Turns Dante's `Inferno' Into a Video Game

While literary classics rarely get turned into video games, they share some DNA. Where would role-playing games be without "The Lord of the Rings"? What would horror games such as "Silent Hill" look like without the influence of H.P. Lovecraft?

So turning a 700-year-old poem into a video game — as Electronic Arts has done with "Dante's Inferno" — really isn't that much of a stretch. "It's such a powerful, universal concept," says executive producer Jonathan Knight.

When Knight, a veteran of more lighthearted projects such as "The Sims 2" and "The Simpsons Game," started thinking about an adventure set in hell, he turned to "The Inferno."

"Dante synthesized hundreds of years of theological debate, reached back into myth and created this amazingly rich and detailed work," Knight says. "Why do all the work all over again?"

Comparing the V-shaped map of the nine circles of hell to a game-design document, Knight points out that "Dante even spec'd out a boss character for each level." And, of course, "the last boss is Lucifer."

Still, the Dante of "The Inferno" is a mostly passive observer, so EA's Visceral Games studio took some liberties. "We needed a hero who was a warrior, with a reason to be fighting," Knight says — so, in the game, Dante's beloved Beatrice has been kidnapped by Lucifer.

Phil Marineau, EA's brand manager for "Dante's Inferno," acknowledges that reaction to such changes has been mixed. "Some people understand what we're doing," Marineau says. "Of course, some wanted us to leave a literary classic alone."

However, Marineau argues: "Artists throughout history have interpreted 'Dante's Inferno' in their own media. And video games are a new art form."

Report: Verizon Has Blocked 4Chan?

According to 4chan's Twitter account and status update blog, they have been "explicitly blocked" by the Verizon wireless network.

If you're unfamiliar with 4chan and why an ISP/wireless company would block it, read more about it on Wikipedia. The high-traffic image board of mostly anonymous users was created by Christopher Poole in 2003 and has been the subject of a fair amount of negative media and legal attention over the past six years. But why would Verizon choose to block the site now? Does this put Verizon on par with foreign ISPs that block torrent sites and social networks? Or is there more to the story?

Poole wrote this afternoon, "Over the past 72 hours, we've been receiving reports from Verizon Wireless customers having difficulty accessing the image boards. After investigating, we found that Verizon is dropping traffic... only on port 80 (HTTP). No other subdomain/IP/port is affected, which leads us to believe this block is intentional."

However, a couple hours ago, Poole posted, "After an hour and a half on the phone, we've received confirmation from Verizon's Network Repair Bureau (NRB) that we are 'explicitly blocked.'"

In the past, we've held a generally negative view of ISP censorship and traffic-shaping, regardless of site content. It'll be interesting to see how this battle shapes up, as Poole is calling for 4chan users to file complaints with Verizon's Network Repair Bureau.

We are contacting Poole and Verizon to figure out specifically why the site is being blocked and will update this post as more information becomes available.

While we've personally confirmed that the image boards are not accessible from the Verizon wireless network, we're not certain that Verizon as an ISP is blocking the site or whether they plan to in the near future. Again, a move of this magnitude would have to have some pretty compelling justifications, and we can't wait to find out Verizon's reasons.

This incident calls to mind AT&T's temporary blocking of the site in July 2009. Eventually, AT&T said the block was due to a DDoS originating from 4chan IP addresses, to which Poole responded, "We're glad to see this short-lived debacle has prompted renewed interest and debate over net neutrality and Internet censorship - two very important issues that don't get nearly enough attention - so perhaps this was all just a blessing in disguise."

UPDATE: A Verizon NRB rep said their center has been deluged with phone calls but was unable to relate the specific reason the site has been blocked. We are continuing to call other Verizon numbers at this time, but we've been alerted that Verizon has not yet set up any process for dealing with media calls on this issue as no other media outlets have yet contacted them.

UPDATE: Multiple Verizon FIOS/DSL customers have let us know that the boards are still accessible from other devices not on the Verizon wireless network. However, we're confused as to why Verizon wireless would block a website and still allow access on other parts of its network.

UPDATE: Poole, a.k.a. Moot, responded to our email this morning, confirming that only Verizon Wireless customers were effected by the block - not FIOS/DSL customers. As for the reason for the block, he wrote, "None of the techs could give us a definitive answer. It took them hours to even figure out/acknowledge the block was occurring on their end."

A major wireless and Internet provider can't tell a website owner why his site is blocked? It's interesting, but the day is young. We hope to receive word from Verizon soon. A Verizon PR exec has said he is looking into the matter, but hasn't yet been able to give us any definitive answer.

EA's infernal new action adventure takes on 2K's anticipated dystopian shooter follow-up, while Square Enix brings Star Ocean: The Last Hope to the PS3.

As has been the trend during the first part of 2010, the second week of February sees a handful of high-profile games march largely alone to retail shelves. This week, the games in question come from Electronic Arts and its one-time acquisition target, Take-Two.

Dante's Inferno sets out to prove the scythe is mightier than the pen.

From EA and Dead Space developer Visceral Games comes Dante's Inferno for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. (A PSP edition is expected to arrive later this month.) Like the epic poem it's based on, the game follows a descent through the nine circles of hell--limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, violence, heresy, fraud, and treachery.

Rather than seeing the protagonist as a passive visitor, the game reimagines Dante as a fierce scythe-wielding warrior who must slay all manner of demonic creatures to rescue his ladylove Beatrice. A demo for Dante's Inferno is available through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.

Take-Two's highly acclaimed BioShock franchise returns on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC this week, though Irrational Games has handed off development to a new studio--or should that be, studios. 2K Marin has taken the reins on the single-player campaign of BioShock 2 and Digital Extremes is crafting the multiplayer component. Support is also being provided by 2K Australia, 2K China, and Arkane Studios.

The single-player campaign is set 10 years after the events of BioShock, with players putting on the diving boots of one of the hulking Big Daddies. The game will feature new plasmids, areas, and opponents, including the dreaded Big Sister. The multiplayer component is set before the first game, allowing gamers a glimpse of life in Rapture as things started to go wrong in the undersea utopia.

One other notable release this week is Square Enix and Tri-Ace's Star Ocean: The Last Hope - International for the PS3. Released as a timed Xbox 360 exclusive in February 2009, the Japanese-style role-playing game is the fourth proper installment in the Star Ocean franchise. The Last Hope is set after World War III and follows humankind as it makes its way into outer space. For an idea of what to expect, check out GameSpot's review of the Xbox 360 installment.

February 3, 2010 - There's no way to tell who's going to win Super Bowl XLIV this Sunday. We can sit here and make all the predictions we want, but that doesn't mean much once the pigskin soars into the air. Still, that won't stop us from trying. In yet another attempt to see who will win Sunday's colossal contest, we're simulating the game in Madden NFL 10.

We've updated the rosters (though Dwight Freeney is still playing), we've stamped the proper insignia's on Miami's field and we've set the clock to the requisite seven minutes (the amount of time EA Sports suggests to get realistic statistics and scoring) in order to bring you the truest Super Bowl simulation possible.

I've done a lot of these over my years at IGN, but this sim of Sunday's big game was easily the most exciting I've ever seen. If the real thing is anywhere near as exhilarating, the football world is in for one hell of a treat.

1st Quarter
The Saints came out absolutely on fire for Super Bowl XLIV. They took it to the Colts in the first quarter with two touchdowns and a field goal, all of which went unanswered. Brees scored 30-yard and 48-yard touchdown passes and Hartley tacked on a 42-yard field goal for good measure. If the game continued like this, the Colts would be in serious trouble. Thankfully, things would eventually change.

2nd Quarter
The end of the first half was nowhere near as enthralling as the beginning. The Colts were able to answer back with a touchdown of their own thanks to a 27-yard scamper by Addai who finished with just 53 yards on 16 attempts for the game.

3rd Quarter
The start of the second half was as quiet as the end of the first with the lone points coming from the Saints in the third quarter. Hartley booted a 26-yard field goal with 26 seconds left on the clock to give the Saints what seemed to be an insurmountable 20-7 lead heading into the final quarter.

4th Quarter
In what can only be described as the greatest fourth quarter comeback in Super Bowl history, the Colts came roaring back with two unanswered touchdowns. The first was an easy two-yard run by Addai, the second marked a colossal mistake by Brees as Indy was able to intercept him and return it 41 yards for the touchdown. The score was then 21-20, Colts. All seemed lost for the Saints as the clock ticked below one minute. In a last-ditch effort, the Saints scampered 40 yards down the field in just 30 seconds to kick a 42-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining.

The score sat at 23-21 with the Saints in front as the Colts returned a Saints pooch kick. It was on the second play from scrimmage, with 13 seconds left on the clock that Peyton Manning hit Dwight Clark for his fifth and most important catch of the game. Clark was able to break a few tackles and scamper down the field for a 68-yard touchdown, sealing the victory for the Colts. For whatever reason, Indy decided to go for two (Madden's questionable AI at work). They failed and the final score wound up being 27-23 with the Colts outscoring the Saints 20-3 in the fourth quarter. Peyton Manning took home MVP honors with 256 yards on 16 for 22 passing and one touchdown. Drew Brees actually had more impressive numbers with 300 yards on 17 for 27 passing and two touchdowns, but it was the last drive by Manning that put him over the top.

The images are linked on imageshack and some of the graphics are actual blizzard graphics. The source doesn't match up with authentic Blizzard email's either.

I apologize for how ugly this is, I didnt have time to break down the parts and put em up nice and pretty. Wanted to get this post up to warn people.

World of Warcraft players desperate for a new mount to traverse the online role-playing game’s fantasy world are getting a reality check from hackers who have devised a clever pop-up phishing scam to spread malware.

Security technicians at F-Secure Security Lab on Tuesday posted a blog entry Tuesday detailing the latest scam making its way through the world’s most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG).

With more than 11.5 million monthly subscribers, Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft is not only the most successful MMORPG in history, but also a very popular environment for hackers, phishers and assorted click-fraud scam artists.

This latest hoax preys on players’ desire to add mounts for their online avatars to ride. After clicking on a link to get a new trial mount, players are redirected to a malicious phishing Web site that mimics an official WoW page.

Those players who are still hard up for a mount are then prompted to enter their WoW log-in details.

“Apart from losing all the gold and items saved, a compromised account could also be used to send out the malicious messages to other victims, adding insult to injury,” the researchers warned in their blog post. “An interesting detail about this particular site is that a reverse-IP check on its IP address turned up over a dozen other WoW phishing sites.”

F-Secure officials remind players that phishing sites like the one identified today are blocked by the security firm’s browser protection software.

World of Warcraft holds an estimated 62 percent of the MMORPG market. The third expansion set, Cataclysm, was announced at the BlizzCon conference earlier this year.

After installing Atlas, players notice a new icon on the minimap that looks like part of a little globe (right-click the icon to drag it around the minimap's frame). Click this icon to open up the main Atlas window, which displays the maps and legend. Alternatively use the slash-command /atlas. The drop-downs at the top of the window enable navigation between the maps. Lock it in place with the little lock button in the upper-right corner.

At the bottom of the legend is a small text-entry field as well as Search and Reset buttons. 5. Healbot: - This AddOn allows for twenty key+mouse combinations to cast any beneficial spells and also allowing for twenty key mouse combinations to cast on disabled bars. Usable items can be added to all combos and any existing macro's can be added to all combos. Targeting, focus, and assist can be added to all combo's. Healbot also can track and display who has agro in any given encounter. Healbot also can be integrated to perform decursive functions, monitoring buffs, and buffing. Multiple healbots in a party or raid will sync incoming heals. Also built in is an accurate range check at all times for spells and items.

I realize that this is totally out of context for this blog, but no one reads it anyways and I can vent my opinions freely.

Health care has been an issue for quite some time. I"m 34 years old and I have had insurance my entire life. In college I was on my parents, and when I became old enough and absolutely had to get a job I did and health care was part of the package. It's been something that I have definitely taken for granted. I have mixed feelings on "socialization" of health care. I have read many peoples opinions from the far right, to the far left ranging from "look at the VA hospital system", meaning that is government run and its bad. Taking a look at it though, I think that the people that say that are playing on the fears and memories of the baby boomers. I look at the VA system today and I see military people coming back from the desert needing prosthetic limbs and receiving them courtesy of the VA system, along with all of the aftercare that is needed for such procedures. Granted, in the 60s it seems that the VA system was flawed and did not take care of our vets as it should have. Their was a general apathy towards the war, and maybe in retrospect that played some part in it? I wasn't there to know for sure, and research will only take you so far in understanding how things were at that time. Now, however, they seem a lot better. Cleaner facilities from the ones I have seen, technologically advanced, and seemingly run according to a better standard in the past.

Let's look at the number of people that are currently without health care in the US. I never really understood how you can take a "survey" of in this case, 29k Americans and then document that as 16% of a group of people that numbers over 228,000,000. This defies logic to me. You would have to have such a diverse group of people surveyed to even come close to an accurate picture. One would have to ask, what is the demographic for this survey? Is it inner city D.C. or The Hamptons? Anyways, this recent Gallup poll surveyed more than 29,000 individuals in June, 2009. Their survey showed that 16% of Americans over the age of 18 are currently without health care.

Let's put that in perspective. Roughly 228,000,000 Americans over the age of 18. 16.6% do not have health insurance so 36.5 million people are without any health insurance at all. This does not count medicare or medicaid recipients which one would assume would run that number up a bit. I also learned something very interesting while researching all of this. 41% of Hispanic Americans are uninsured, which is by far the largest class that is not insured. Next are those that make less than 36k a year at 28.6% uninsured and then those ages 18-29 at 27.6%, and lets face it, they don't need insurance really anyways.

So, the people that stand to benefit the most from this are the Hispanics, lower middle class, and young Americans. So, pretty much the people that elected Obama. His speeches lately though have left much to be desired on the topic of health care as he tries to cater his words to both the left and the right it seems. Good thing everyone is so broke still that the economy is more of a worry or I think people would be more worried about this issue than they seem to be.

Then theres the studies that show that out of the total 47 million or so Americans that are uninsured totally, there are additionally around another 25 million that are under insured due to "caps" in coverage and cost of drugs and additional variables. These are the really the people that need insurance the post. Get diagnosed for a brain tumor for example and your insurance most likely covers up to $150k. Cost of surgery and treatment tops 250k for this leaving the "insured" on the hook for the rest. This, in my opinion is the strongest case for a National health care program there can be. Limits on cost, coverage for all, and limits on drug costs for everyone. Equal health care should be the norm for Americans as it is for the rest of the "enlightened world", but this is not so.
